Maybury Family

“Find your tribe, love them hard”

maybury family (12 of 75)This family is truly one in a million! Meet Vickie (middle), Becky and Paddy! Then meet Marley, Emmy, Harmony, Matty and Riley. (left to right) We will get to know the dogs a little better later in the blog, don’t worry 🙂

maybury family (27 of 75)This family was so much fun and with the help of an assistant, I got some great shots of them looking at the camera! Squeaky toys and treats came in VERY handy for this shoot!

Vickie is a highly dynamic and talented MASTER DIRECTOR of Skyline Chorus! Skyline is a part of Sweet Adelines International! Sweet Adelines is made up of hundreds of choruses throughout the world. They do a lot of educational programs and some of the choruses compete in contests through out the year. The ladies of Skyline enjoy a love of singing and an enthusiasm for sharing the joy of music. The chorus is the 2016 4th Place International medalist, and sport a repertoire that includes gospel, pop, show tunes, old ballads that tug at your heartstrings and of course traditional barbershop melodies. I am super lucky to be a part of Skyline! We will be competing in the October 2018 International competition in St. Louis! We are truly blessed to have such an amazing and loving leader to take us there.

Becky is Vickie’s oldest and is a social worker. On top of ALL the work she does at her date job, she is a HUGE part of the chorus, and has been since she was in her mamas’ belly 🙂 Becky is the assistant director for Skyline Chorus, in Denver, along side her mom. She also does learning tracks for the chorus and she sings lead in Vintage, a fantastic quartet that is making their way to international along with Skyline this year. If you want to check out more about what Becky does, check my blog about her amazing quartet, Vintage, here: https://mandypennphotography.com/2018/07/31/vintage-quartet/

Paddy, like his mom and sister, is also extremely talented and sings as well. He sings with Sound of the Rockies, a mens barbershop chorus in Denver. Paddy has a great sense of humor and is really down to earth. He is currently Becky’s roommate, so Matty, Marley and Riley get to be together 😉  Riley and him are best buds!

maybury family (52 of 75)This is Matty, at 13, she is the oldest of the dogs. If you cant tell, she is an Australian Shepherd and is SUPER soft! Becky actually got her when she was in her undergrad program.

Marley is almost 18 months old. She is one month younger than Harmony. Becky says, “I got her because I was afraid I wouldn’t get another dog after Matty.”

This gorgeous gal is Emmy, and she is a 12 year old Springer Spaniel. She is Vickies dog and helps keep Harmony in line, which takes a lot of work! Emmy is always so sweet and loving..because she is a little older she is pretty calm so that helped for pictures 😉

Speaking of Harmony…she is 18 months old and is also a Springer Spaniel like Emmy! She is so full of energy and just LOVES everyone! Vickie actually flew to Nevada to pick her up and she knew right then that she was the perfect puppy for her!

maybury family (49 of 75)

This is Riley and he is 9 years old. He is a heeler mix and was the best behaved out of all the pups! Paddy was pretty good also!

maybury family (34 of 75)They don’t love each other at all, huh?

Just a few more for your viewing pleasure…

Thank you so much for taking the time to read about this amazing family and their pups! Stay tuned for the next blog coming tomorrow! Till next time…

Vintage Quartet

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” Plato

Meet Vintage! These lovely ladies are a barbershop quartet and not only do they love to sing but they are good at it. Vintage competed at regional contest this year and earned themselves a place at Sweet Adeliens international competition, this October, in St. Louis! It is a huge honor to compete at that level and they are going to rock that stage.

This evening was actually the first time ALL four members were together and the first time they were able to sing together! This makes the fact that they are going to international even more impressive.

Let’s meet the members of this amazing quartet!

Meet Becky, the lead in the quartet. For those who don’t know, the lead is the melody in a quartet and is normally the melodic line of the song. Becky is what you would call a barbershop brat, meaning she was born to sing in Sweet Adelines. Her mom is a judge, director and everything in between for The Sweet Adelines organization and has been since she was pregnant with her. Becky is one of the most talented women I know. Not only does she have a full time job, as a social worker, but she is the assistant director for Skyline Chorus, in Denver, along side her mom. She has earned her place and actually just applied to the judging program, and got accepted! She also does learning tracks for the chorus and is branching out to other choruses and quartets within the organization! She sings Lead in Vintage, but in the chorus sings baritone, and tenor, depending on the song. Her drive and love for barbershop is evident and she is a great leader and educator.

Meet Laura, she sings bass. Bass is the lowest part in barbershop and has to be prominent and on point! Laura is a fantastic bass and recently switched from baritone in the chorus. She is also a barbershop brat, so it was only a matter of time before she joined Sweet Adelines! She grew up around barbershop, and is now the 3rd generation, in her family, to join this hobby! Her mom and grandmother were Sweet Adelines, and her dad and grandfather’s were in the men’s society. Her dad is a two-time international quartet champion (Grandma’s Boys and Keepsake), and her brother sings with the Dapper Dans at Disney World, in Florida. Skyline is her first barbershop chorus! Laura is currently working as a project coordinator with Muller Engineering and volunteers with the Child Life department at the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children. Something fun about Laura is that she worked on a cruise ship (Holland America Line) for 2 years as a sound technician. She was able to sail around the Baltic Sea in Europe, the Caribbean and Alaska.

This is Lisa, she is the baritone in the quartet. Not sure what baritone is? Me either! Baritone makes no sense, unless you sing the part, except to fill in the cord. It’s an interesting and difficulty part to master. If you ever meet someone who sings baritone, ask them to sing their part alone and you will see what I mean. Lisa works as a career change coach, helping individuals transition from one career path to another one, that better fits them. She sang in both middle and high school choirs, and joined Sweet Adelines, back in Virginia, in 2013 with the Potomac Harmony Chorus. She then transferred to Vienna Falls chorus in 2015 and is now singing with Vintage! She is hoping to eventually join Skyline with the rest of the girls. She is located in Boulder but commutes to sing with the quartet. She is truly an amazing asset to this team!

Meet the newest member of Vintage, Lizzie! Lizzie joined Vintage about a month ago due to the exit of Morgan, Vintage’s former tenor, who couldn’t compete at internationals because of work issues. Lizzie sings tenor, which is the highest part…much like 1st soprano, but more like the baritone, notes wise. I know it’s confusing! Lizzie started singing in Sweet Adelines in high school with her mom. She joined her first quartet at that time as well, called Little Women. After college, life swept her off on many other adventures. She lived and worked in New York City for a few years and from there started living and working on traditionally rigged sailboats as a cook. After years of sailing, traveling and cooking (and many other adventures!) She found her way to Boulder. “The best part of living in one place again is having the opportunity to sing again.” She joined Skyline Chorus earlier this year and from there got to sing with the ladies of Vintage! She does many part time jobs in Boulder, including catering, working as an Innkeeper at a local B&B, and teaching sewing classes. Fun Fact: last year she toured the US with a company called Outstanding In The Field and put on over 100 farm dinners in the course of 6 months. Wow!!

Helping people and changing lives, one meal at a time…

“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much” Helen Keller

This quote from Helen Keller really resonated with me while I was taking pictures of these selfless ladies last Saturday!

Colorado Feeding Kids is a non-profit organization that helps feed malnourished kids in Colorado. If you’ve never heard of this organization, it is one to make yourself familiar with. Did you know that 14,400 children die each day from hunger or related disease? There are 1,000,000,000 people hungry around the world, 815,000 of those people residing in Colorado (2011). 1 in 7, or 14% of Coloradans worry about food. 23% of Colorado households report food hardships. You can change lives with this food. These statistics are crazy and I would have never known it was that bad even here in Colorado.*

Last weekend, an amazing chorus from Denver took a few hours out of their Saturday to help package over 21,000 meals. Skyline Chorus is a barbershop chorus of over 130 women. They are ranked in the top 5 choruses in the world and will be competing in St Louis at international this coming October. If you want to know more about this amazing group of women check them out here: https://skylinechorus.net/ OR follow them on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/skylinechorus/

On Saturday, June 2nd, the chorus met at the Colorado Feeding Kids warehouse in Denver to help. Not only did they package up over 21,000 bags of meals, but they laughed and sang while doing it. You can see the camaraderie within the chorus, and it was so nice giving back to the community.

Here are just a few comments from some of the members that were able to help:

Colorado Feeding Kids 2018 (4 of 76)“Many of us are mothers, and the thought of a child going hungry in this country is so hard. Children are our future. They need to be fed and nourished. Our few hours of work and camaraderie were a small, but vital part of helping to alleviate those hunger pains. Let’s field a packing team again soon!” – Gayle Miller

Colorado Feeding Kids 2018 (3 of 76)

“I believe no child should ever be hungry. This is such a wonderful organization…helping so many! I love helping out!!!” – Jo Cousino

Colorado Feeding Kids 2018 (36 of 76)“I always feel so good inside when helping those less fortunate than I. It is always better to give than receive.” – Karen Herdahl

Colorado Feeding Kids’ mission statement is to significantly reduce the number of hungry children in Colorado, and to feed starving children throughout the world. They are succeeding in these areas, but always need help. $54 supplies one carton of meals, which feeds 216 malnourished children. $108 supplies enough meals to feed a child for 60 weeks.

Giving back without expecting something in return should be done more. Volunteering, whether it be for Colorado Feeding Kids or your local food bank or l another non profit, is something we should be instilling in our kids. It was heart-warming to see how the kids were so willing to help and how much fun they had with it. It wasn’t about work, it was about helping those who are in need. You never know what people are going through, and helping them out in this single part of their lives helps tremendously.

It wasn’t about teaching the kids about working hard, it was about coming together to help those less fortunate in the community. You never know what people are going through, and providing a basic need is something that can bring them some peace. There are so many bad things in the world that we tend to obsess over, but if we can all take a moment and help each other instead, the world would be a much better place.

The more we help each other, the more positivity we put out into our neighborhoods and cities. There is so much bad in the world that we tend to obsess over, but if we can all take a moment and help each other, the world would be a much better place.
